Kaya Buyukataman

Country: Connecticut, United States of America

Mr. Kaya Buyukataman has worked toward the unification of Turks, Turkish Americans and friends of Turks since 1968. His first efforts were concentrated on formation of much needed TACA- Michigan which he and his wife Esin served in Board of directors of TACAM at various capacities.

He also contributed in the preparation of TACAM bylaws, and in various committee activities. Mr Buyukataman worked toward establishment of unified Great Lakes Turkish American Associations, and He later directed his efforts for the formation and support of ATAA. He was one of the well-known supporters of ATAA in the Great Lakes Region.

On moving in Boston Area During 1980, He began the work with Honorary Consul Orhan Gunduz toward serving the needs of Turkish American community in Greater Boston area. He and his wife were selected to the board of directors of the TACS of New England, and served several years in various capacities, guided committee activities. Mr. Mrs. Buyukataman was a representative of TACS-NE during various conventions of ATAA. During the period he served in the TACA-NE, the association was flourished and reached to its peak in member-ship and in community activities.

Mr. Buyukataman also served to ATAA and to the Turkish American community as Vice president of Media Watch / Media response committee of the Eastern region, He than successfully established the first communication line from New England to Florida covering 12 states and various Turkish American organizations of the eastern region. This is accomplished in a very short period of time and without any financial support from ATAA. This took place during 1988 and 1989 periods.

Mr Buyukataman was selected as Vice-President of ATAA, covering mid central region, this took place on His relocation to Ohio. Mr. Buyukataman established working relations with, Central Ohio, Northern Ohio, And Michigan Turkish American Associations; He also started organizing Turkish- Americans and friends of Turkey in Kentucky and Cincinnati area. Turkish American Friendship association was born in direct result of his devotion to the Turkish American community. Mr Buyukataman during his vice presidency also located an existing Indiana association and made efforts to bring them under the umbrella of ATAA. This took place during 1989 and 1991 periods. Mr Buyukataman relocated during 1991 to Hartford CT. Hartford area was hosting about 560 Turkish, large number of friends of Turkey and about 1500 Albanian families, none of those were represented by any Turkish American association. In less than a year, Mr. Buyukataman was organized and prepared the bylaws of Southern NE-TACA, and formed the Southern NE-TACA. The association was addressing the needs of Eastern Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, with the help of board of directors, he established several committees to serve the needs of Southern New England community. He was selected as the first president of the Southern NE-TACA, in 1992. During two-year period SNE_TACA became a model community among Turkish-American Associations. Association was respected and recognized by State and private establishments, an annual ceremony was established with State of Connecticut to celebrate Turkish Independence Day. Teacher workshops were established. A Turkish Children Sunday school became operational, Major steps were taken to support Bosnian Countryman, and policy of Turkey on Bosnia. Organized Trade, Cultural, and Educational seminars. Established Ties with the major Connecticut corporations to obtain funding to support on going and endless SNE-TACA activities. During this period he also started the young Turks Movement. Two official associations were formed in Connecticut and Massachusetts, By the Young Turks, Called Young Turks of America Cultural Associations, (Young-TACA), which one of them is a member association of ATAA. Kaya Buyukataman and his team (board) were re-elected as new BOD of SNE-TACA for the period of 1994-1996. Which during this period SNE-TACA was received most active association award during the annual Convention of ATAA.

Since 1992 Mr. Buyukataman has served to the needs of North Eastern (New England) states of USA as regional vice President of ATAA and FTAA for the region. The associations of New England States were established strong ties and Joint activities during this period. Mr. Buyukataman received strong support from ATAA and it media server Turkish Times, and From FTAA during this period. Majority of the successful activities were modeled after the methodologies established by FTAA and ATAA. The FTAA and ATAA BODs were strong supporters of the activities started in the region.

One other Major accomplishment is the Formation of ITU Alumni Association International. This Association was formed during 1993 and today it has 18 component Association in USA, 3 component Association in Canada and One component association in Australia, one in England, One in Norway, one in Japan...and a grand total of 32 Alumni associations in 16 different countries... still growing. The ITU-MD International also has strong ties with six other ITU associations, which includes Trust based formations in Turkey. Today Joint membership base reaches to 6000 members. Mr. Buyukataman is the founding father of the association, and he is elected for a new term during the May, 1999 convention At New York. The convention hosted delegates around the globe, and dignitaries ( Ministers, Consuls) of Republic of Turkey, and Heads of regional Turkish American Associations.

Upon moving into New England area Mr. Buyukataman was reelected two consecutive terms to the board of directors of ATAA and served from 1992 to 1996 as its VP responsible from the New England region. He led the activities relevant to Turkish American community. The New England region of ATAA did became a model community for nation due to activities relevant to Turkish Americans.

Mr. Buyukataman also served in the board of directors of FTAA (Federation of Turkish American Associations) from 1992 to 1996 as its VP responsible media actions and from the associations outside the New York State.

Mr Buyukataman elected to the Board of directors of ASA (Ataturk society of America) during 1994 and began contributing to the grassroots movement in Turkey and Turkish communities outside the Turkey. During the year 1995 and 1996 he has served at the board of MIM, Society of Turkish Architects, Engineers, and Scientists. As it’s President Elect. During this period his major support to MIM was the organization of an International convention in Istanbul as part of HABITAT-II, subject being ‘Energy and Environment”. Mr. Buyukataman resigned from MIM after that, the reason for the resignation is due to an unexpected increase in required attention and in workload to manage and lead the MIM.

Today he is the president of ITU Alumni International http://www.itumuk.org President of TURKISH FORUM, Board member of SNE-TACA as its past president and Chairman of SNE-TACA Advisory Board, He is an extremely active and recognized lieder in Grassroots movement (TURKISH FORUM) concerning Turkish American Community of USA, AND HE IS THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF FEDARATION OF TURKISH AMERICAN ASSOCIATIONS, http://www.ftaa.org.

Mr Buyukataman actively served various other association and charitable organizations in various capacities, including community support and fund raising Mr. Buyukataman is well known an a respected engineer of his field.

In his professional life Mr. Buyukataman was last Employed by Advance Systems at UTC PRATT & WHITNEY Commercial Engines Division .He has 30+ years of experience in the DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND MANUFACTURING of components for Automotive, Marine, Turbine Engine, Propeller and Ducted Fan Power Gearboxes. His experience also includes TECHNICAL EVALUATION, DEMONSTRATION and TECHNOLOGY UPGRADE Programs and program management in Power Gearboxes Field.

Mr. Kayaalp Buyukataman has 29 technical publications; He has contributed to ISO, AGMA, GEAE, and P&W Design Standards. He is a member of distiquished technical societies (AIAA, ASME, TSME...). He is the Vice Chairman of AGMA Aerospace Committee, Chairman of ASME Power Transmission/Gear Dynamic Committee, Ex-chairman of GE Corporate Gear Technology Board, Ex-chairman of ASME Lubrication and Wear Committee, Member of INFAC Coalition Board of Directors (which is a $60 Million Dollar establishment of Department of Defense) and a Member of UTC Transmission Design Technology Board. Mr. K. Buyukataman holds PhD, MBA, MSME (Honors), MSIE, and MSNA. He has thought and lectured at Technical University of Istanbul, Wayne State University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Buyukataman also lectured for trade associations across the country.

In his professional life Mr. buyukataman received * one outstanding technical achievement from Ford Motor Comp, * two outstanding technical achievement from GE Aircraft Engines, * four technical appreciation from AGMA. * Recipient UTC Technical Leadership award (5 Years on The Row) *One appreciation Award from ASME * One Special Recognition Award From MIM * Admitted to the grade of Senior Member by AIAA. And ASME.

In the future, It is his desire to serve the needs of the community to best he can by participating and promoting Teacher workshops, Media watch / Media response, Fund raising, Scholarships, Youth associations, and establishment of new organizations where needed. Support to Turks Around The Word, Promotion of Turkey by means available to him. His future plans also includes strong Political action where the issues relevant to Turkish American Community and Turkey.

At present, Mr. Buyukataman is:

1- President and Founder of TURKISHFORUM (Three terms (8 years) and continuing) Organization include 180000. Members across the globe. It is the strongest grassroots organization functions within global boundaries.

2- Executive Vice president of Federation of Turkish American Associations, in New York NY, USA (6 years and continuing), Organization is oldest and the largest grassroots organization in the USA.

3- President (5terms. 9 Years and continuing) Istanbul Technical University Alumni Association, International, USA (Organization includes 36 Component Associations, in 20 Countries, and Total of 3500 members outside the Turkey).

4- Founding President and Advisory Board chairmen, Board Member Southern New England Turkish American Cultural Association, CT, USA (Four terms 9 years)

5- BJK-USA Yonetim kurulu Uyesi (2ND year)
