Stanford J. Shaw has been Professor of Turkish and Near-Eastern History at the University of California,
Los Angeles from 1968 until his retirement in 1992, after which he was recalled as Professor Emeritus of
Turkish History to continue at UCLA until 1998. At present, he is a professor of History at Bilkent University
in Ankara and previously was Assistant and Associate Professor of Turkish History at Harvard between 1958 and
1958. He also has been Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Middle East Studies since its inception
in 1970. His educational background includes Stanford University (California), Princeton University (New
Jersey), University of London (United Kingdom) and University of Cairo (Egypt).
Author of Between Old and New: The Ottoman Empire under Sultan Selim III, The Financial and Administrative
Organization and Development of Ottoman Egypt, Ottoman Egypt in the Age of the French Revolution, The Budget of
Ottoman Egypt, and numerous other monographs and articles on Ottoman institutional and social history, Professor
Shaw has been a pioneer among western scholars in the use of the Ottoman archives.
